White Oak ISD Takes the Awards at TCEA!

White Oak ISD’s presence was felt in a big way the week of February 6 – February 11, 2011 at the Texas Computer Education Association’s (TCEA) annual convention in Austin, Texas. White Oak was well represented by the fifteen employees who descended on Austin during the week. Employees of White Oak ISD presented ten separate workshops, served on two panels, participated in one focus group, and made connections with countless school districts across the state. Most importantly, three of White Oak’s own were honored during two separate events. Michael Gilbert was honored as one of the top three Superintendents of the state while Michael Gras was named the TCEA Technology Administrator of the Year. Mr. Gilbert received a plaque and check for $500, while Mr. Gras received a plaque and check for $1,000. Both educators have committed their award money to building a fish pond at the nature center. Scott Floyd received the Making IT Happen Pink Jacket award at a luncheon on Wednesday.  Making IT Happen is an internationally recognized awards program for educators and leaders in the field of educational technology integration in K–12 schools. The program identifies and rewards educational technology leaders around the world for their commitment and innovation.  This is just one more example that demonstrates there is no better place to be an educator or student than White Oak ISD!

teacher winner

Mrs. Dickson awards the winning teacher an AR pointer. The winning teacher is the teacher that had the most students meet their AR goals for the six weeks. For the second time in a row, Mrs. Owens was presented the prize.

reward wall

In keeping with our theme, “The Sky’s the Limit!”, all the students who met their AR goals for the third six weeks had their name placed on a balloon on the wall across from the library. To meet their goal, students had to meet their individual point goal with a passing percentage of 85%. The wall shows the six layers of the atmosphere: troposphere, stratosphere, thermosphere, mesosphere, exosphere, and outer space. If a student met their point goal, their balloon is in the first layer. If a student obtained twice their point goal, their balloon floats in the second layer of the atmosphere. There are two students whose balloons are floating in outer space because they racked up more than 6 times their individual point goal! WAY TO GO, CHRISTIAN and MADISON!!!

Christmas Around the World

Tis the season to be jolly – and to see what other people all over the world are doing to celebrate this season. Many classes have been looking at how other cultures celebrate Christman.  White Oak Intermediate School’s Gifted and Talented bunch have just completed their Christmas Around the World project.  The physical displays they created showing the similarities and differences between the way we celebrate Christmas and how other countries celebrate can be viewed by other classes and adults in the library today and tomorrow (December 16-17th).  They also captured the result of their research on video using green screen technology.  The result of their hard work is shown below:
