Honoring Our Soldiers

Today is December 7, Pearl Harbor Day, and it is not going unnoticed by the students at White Oak Elementary. All over the primary and intermediate campuses today, students are honoring our American soldiers in varied ways. White Oak, Texas, does not lack for its own honorees living right here in our community.

Bill Terry, 88, has lived in White Oak long enough to see eight of his own children graduate as Roughnecks, eleven of his sixteen grandchildren also graduate as Roughnecks, and currently has seventeen of his great grandchildren enrolled at White Oak. His story of Pearl Harbor holds special meaning to our small town. You may read his story today in the Longview News Journal, Attack on Pearl Harbor: East Texan recalls infamous day

William is scheduled to speak with his father in Afghanistan today via Skype straight from the classroom.

In addition, today fifth grade teacher, Rebecca Ganong, has arranged to Skype with one of her student’s fathers who is stationed in Afghanistan. This will be a first for the students, and they are extremely excited. For the first time in a long time, father and son will talk face-to-face via Skype. We are proud to be a part of this unique experience.

  1. I am very appreicative of Mr. Bill Terry’s service to our country. His dedication to answer our Nation’s call to duty during a time of extreme hostility to our country’s survival is a an example we can all learn from. Mr. Terry’s combat experience (and survival) affords us the freedoms we enjoy today.

Mrs. Ganong, thank you for providing a young man a chance to reunite w/his warrior father. I suspect it will mean even more to Dad than to son.

This is an event that all the students will remember and cherish.
